Coming into the 2011 British Open, Phil Mickelson wasn’t considered a favorite. The American media always likes to rally around Phil before the three American majors, as he’s had plenty of great performances in all three of them, but he’s never duplicated that success in the British Open. The oddsmakers didn’t like Phil before the tournament started, and he admitted himself that the tournament is going to be a serious challenge. He’s playing well so far, though, as he’s even par though his front nine after a very consistent performance.
2011 British Open Leaderboard Scores: Phil Mickelson Even Par After Nine; Thomas Bjorn Still Leads
Things looked bad for Phil when he bogeyed the opening hole of his round, but he got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 7th hole. All of Mickelson’s other seven holes have been pars. He’s hit seven of nine greens in regulation and he hasn’t three-putted, so he should be fairly happy with his performance.
At the top of the leaderboard, Thomas Bjorn still leads at five-under with Miguel Angel Jimenez sitting in second at four-under. Englishman Lee Westwood, one of the pre-tournament favorites, is struggling at three-over through nine holes. You can find the entire leaderboard here.
