Tom Lewis Tied For 2011 British Open Lead: Who’s That, Again?

Twenty-year-old amateur Tom Lewis is tied with Thomas Bjorn for the lead at the end of the 2011 British Open’s opening round, with both players reaching 5-under on the day. That’s the lowest score an amateur has ever posted in the Open, which is reasonably impressive. He caught fire down the stretch, connecting four straight birdies to surge into a share of the driver’s seat, which in England is on the right.

Who in the world is Tom Lewis, anyway?

The English player from Welwyn Garden City won a far lesser title at Royal St. George’s in his past, and nearly captured a European Tour event in 2010. He’s won a handful of amateur events throughout England in his very brief time. He was named after Tom Watson, his father’s favorite golfer, and ended up playing alongside Watson Thursday.

His girlfriend Lara Cornell knows the game, too -- last month the pair won the St. Andrews Links Trophy, with Cornell taking caddy duties.

Lewis has said his goal is to make the 2011 Walker Cup. Think he might have a bigger goal in mind all of a sudden?
