2011 British Open Leaderboard Results: Phil Mickelson’s Eagle Highlights Five-Under Front Nine

The 2011 British Open is coming to a close as most of the major players are making their way to the back side in Sandwich, England. While the Open Championship didn’t look like it’d be won by a big-name golfer after following the first three rounds, Phil Mickelson’s impressive front nine on Sunday nearly put him atop the leaderboard.

Mickelson went into Day 4 on par and tied for seventh place, but “Lefty” was able to drop his score by five strokes after his first nine holes on Sunday at Royal St. Goerge’s. At five-under, Mickelson moved into second place behind Darren Clarke, inching ever closer to earning his first British Open victory.

Mickelson tied his personal-record for a nine-hole score at a major by scoring an even 30 through the first nine holes. Lefty sank an eagle on the seventh hole and birdied Holes 2, 4 and 6 to give himself the early edge, but if he had been able to pick up a birdie by sinking his first putt on either the eighth or ninth hole, he would’ve broke his own record and moved himself into a tie for first through the front nine.

Mickelson’s already off to a solid start on the back nine, nailing a birdie at the tenth hole, so it’s probably worth following along on Twitter at @SBNationLive for the remainder of the Open.
