Luke Donald is currently the world’s top-ranked golfer, and rightly so: he won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February, won the BMW PGA Championship, a European Tour major, in May, and has eight top 10s in 10 PGA Tour events this year. But despite his perch atop the World Golf Rankings, Donald has never won a major championship, and he’ll be looking to do that in the 2011 British Open at Royal St. George’s starting July 14.
British Open 2011: Luke Donald Looks To Win First Major At Open Championship
Donald has just five top 10s in 32 career major starts, and his British Open record is even less impressive. Donald has played in 10 Open Championships: he has been cut in five, finished in the top 30 just twice, and placed in the top five just once. That top five finish, a tie for fourth in 2009, came after Donald battled gamely to get back to even par for the tournament with a 3-under 67 on Sunday. He finished two shots back of eventual winner Stewart Cink and his playoff foe, Tom Watson.
Donald played in the last British Open to take place at Royal St. George’s in 2003. He was cut after shooting 76-79 on the par-70 course in his first two rounds.
