Lee Westwood enters the 2011 British Open near the top of the golf world. He is No. 2 in the World Golf Rankings, behind only fellow Englishman Luke Donald, but a win in his home tournament has yet to come. He’s played in every Open Championship since 1995, but he’s finished all over the leaderboard, including four missed cuts.
British Open 2011: Lee Westwood Looks For Elusive Claret Jug Victory
But for the last two years, Westwood has seen victory just out of his reach. In 2009, Westwood was in position to stay neck-and-neck with his competitors, but he bogeyed several holes to finish one stroke back of Stewart Cink and Tom Watson, the former picking up a victory in a playoff. Coming off his third-place finish, Westwood came back in 2010 with a 9-under, but that wasn’t enough to eclipse Louis Oosthuizen who shot 16-under.
Westwood’s other top-five finish came in 2004 when he shot 6-under at Royal Troon. The one time Westwood competed at Royal St. George’s came in 2003 and he shot a 9-over, missing the cut.
With better finishes the last two years, is the top spot Westwood’s to claim this year?
