J.B. Holmes has withdrawn from The Barclays and will undergo brain surgery to treat a rare malady.

Holmes was diagnosed with Chiari malformations in May. The condition, which is caused by a displacement of the cerebellar tonsils, can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and paralysis. Holmes’ is a less severe case, and he described his September 1 surgery as “relatively low-risk.”

Holmes could return to the golf course within a month after his surgery to do chipping and putting, with full range of practice and competitive play following in subsequent months.

Holmes had been enjoying a moderately successful year on the PGA Tour in 2011, with four top-10 and seven top-25 finishes in 16 starts and nearly $1.4 million in prize money. But Holmes hadn’t played to the weekend in any of his last three events, getting cut at the British Open and the Greenbrier Classic before withdrawing after a first round 80 at the PGA Championship.
