Republicans like golf, and that’s no malarkey

A study by TiVo found Republicans prefer to watch golf and car racing on television, while Democrats prefer comedies.

If you watch a lot of golf on TV, chances are you’re a Republican. At least that’s what an assessment of the viewing habits of registered voters indicated in a study released Thursday.

The analysis from TiVo Research and Analytics supported anecdotal evidence that registered Republicans prefer golf and NASCAR when they sit down with the remote. Democrats, on the other hand, favor comedies, especially of the animated variety.

The study measured information from TiVo cable set-top devices during the first half of 2012 and anonymously matched it with voter-registration data from 186,000 households, according to the New York Times. Popularity was not the benchmark for the evaluation; rather, the research arm of DVR pioneer TiVo ranked programs based on how they performed with registered voters of the two major parties as well as Independents.

While NASCAR and televised sports in general were winners with GOP observers, PGA Tour events were among Republicans’ most viewed shows. And with no top-20 network or cable program common to the tastes of Democrats and Republicans, the Times noted that TV watching was “every bit as polarized as the political culture.”

Contrary to what Golf Digest’s 29th best Washington, D.C., golfer, Joe Biden, had to say about assertions from Rep. Paul Ryan during Thursday night’s vice presidential debate -- that’s no malarkey.
