Davis Love pounds down the Red Bull at McGladrey Classic

Among the leaders in Sea Island, Ga. after the opening round, Love credits the drink that ‘gives you wings’ for helping maneuver his busy schedule.

Davis Love III has not enjoyed a lot of sleep lately, what with being on the hot seat as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, the lingering nightmare of his squad blowing the lead to the Europeans, and playing the past couple of weeks in two of the PGA Tour’s four Fall Season events.

So when the 20-time tour winner cruised to an opening-round 5-under 65 at the McGladrey Classic on Thursday, inquiring minds wanted to know how the 48-year-old was able to elevate his play under such trying circumstances.

No, it wasn’t a shot of 5-hour Energy that puts a pep in the step of Ryder Cupper Jim Furyk. Instead, Love credited the energy elixir endorsed by phenoms Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson.

“The only adjustment I’ve made is more Red Bull to keep my energy up,” Love told reporters after a nearly flawless six-birdie day on the Seaside Course at Sea Island, Ga.

“After the Ryder Cup, I’ve been playing these last two weeks, I’m ready to play,” said Love, the player-host of this week’s festivities, who completed his day just three strokes back of clubhouse leaders Bud Cauley and Marco Dawson. “The responsibilities, the parties and all that are a lot of fun, but when I get up in the morning, I can tell I’m not getting a whole lot of rest. But I’m feeling good. I’m excited to play. Obviously I had a great pairing, so it was easy today.”

Nice product placement for the Austrian purveyor of the world’s most popular energy drink. Still, with 23-year-old Fowler and teenager Thompson joining motorbiker Adam Raga, surfer dude Gabriel Villaran, track and field champ Alysia Montano, and a slew of other 20-somethings as faces of the franchise, Red Bull may not be likely to enlist Love to pitch its products.
