The swashbuckling South Carolinian, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey has surged into the lead on Sunday at The McGladrey Classic. Gainey was unconscious during the final round on St. Simons, going out in 31 and coming in with a 29 on the back side to move to 16-under. He currently has a two-shot lead over Jim Furyk, who still has to play the back nine.

In a bid to become just the sixth player in Tour history to card a 59, Tommy “Two Gloves” missed a putt on the 18th by just an inch.

Gainey got hot with the putter and played a six-hole stretch on the back side in 6-under. He drained sizable birdie putts on Nos. 11, 13, 14, and 16, but a hole-out from the bunker on No. 15 was the highlight. His ball was on the upslope, and Gainey cooly knocked it out, running it into the cup.
Gainey started the day seven shots back, but stormed out to the lead with the run. He had a 20-foot putt on No. 18 to become the sixth man in Tour history to shoot a 59, but the ball hung out on the right and missed by just an inch. His 60 was the lowest round of the year on Tour, and it put him in commanding position to pick up the first win of his career.
“Two Gloves” has an incredible story. He is a former Big Break contestant who has a highly unorthodox swing. He crushes the ball off the tee, and he’s had a lot of success on the Tour over the past two years, consistently making noise and getting in the mix on Sunday. But he had yet to pick up a win, and now he’ll sit and wait for a couple hours for Furyk and playing partner Davis Love III to finish up.
