The final stage of 2012 Q-school is halfway home, with 171 players attempting to earn exempt status next season with three more rounds to play. The second half of the final qualifying stage tees off Saturday morning at PGA West, with the Tour sending threesomes off split tees on both the Nicklaus and Stadium courses.

The second half of 2012 Q-school begins Saturday morning, with 171 players attempting to earn their Tour cards for the 2013 season.

The top 25, including ties, will earn their cards for next season. With 54 holes still to play, there’s still plenty of time for players in the bottom half of the leaderboard to make a charge. At the midpoint, Robert Karlsson is one of the handful of familiar names perched atop the board. The lanky Swede is one of the most decorated players at this year’s Q-school, and he’s one shot off leader Mee Whee Kim, who’s posted a 198 through his first three rounds. Karlsson will tee off at 10 a.m. PT on the Stadium Course, playing with Edward Loar and Adam Crawford.
Two other familiar names currently in the top 25 are Camilo Villegas and Erik Compton, the two-time heart transplant survivor who’s looking to maintain his card after an up-and-down 2012 Tour season. He continues to be one of the best stories in the game, and he’ll make his push for another card alongside Villegas on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT on the Stadium Course.
