Rory McIlroy wins European golf writers honor

Andrew Redington

Perhaps Rory McIlroy purchased that swanky McMansion in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., because he needed more space to display the plates, jugs, scepters, and all manner of awards that keep piling up for the world No. 1.

The 23-year-old soon-to-be Floridian, by way of Northern Ireland, grabbed the 2012 European Golf Writers Trophy on Monday after a season in which he won his second major championship, earned the money title on the European and PGA Tours, and secured his spot atop the Official World Golf Rankings. McIlroy, who last week nabbed the PGA Tour Player of the Year honors for a campaign in which he won four times on this side of the Atlantic, beat out Englishmen Ian Poulter and Roger Chapman and the Great Britain/Ireland Curtis Cup team in the balloting for the golf writers’ accolade.

”The 2012 season was a superb one for every aspect of European golf and that comes across when you look at the names of the players in contention for the Golf Writers Trophy this year. Therefore to come out on top of that list is a great honor,” McIlroy said in a statement. “Wherever we play the golf writers are there helping to promote our sport and give a voice to golf and therefore I am delighted to win their award. I hope to give them plenty more good things to write about in 2013.”

McIlroy also shared second place with his European Ryder Cup team, which came from behind at Medinah Country Club to stun the U.S. and retain the cup. Poulter, who went 4-0 in leading the Euros from a 10-6 deficit to a one-point victory, picked up his second World Golf Championship title earlier this month at the HSBC Champions event.

Chapman won the Senior U.S. PGA Championship and the U.S. Senior Open on his way to chalking up the European Senior Tour Order of Merit. The Curtis Cuppers won their matches for the first time in 16 years.

As for the swish new digs McIlroy plans to buy for a reported $10.9 million, the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom house was built in 2012, measures 10,000 square feet, comes with a private deep-water dock and a putting green, and sits across the street from Jack Nicklaus’ private Bears Club golf course, according to Gossip Extra. The Heir Apparent will be just down the road from Tiger Woods and a gaggle of golfers, including Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Robert Allenby, Ernie Els, and Gary Player, according to the tabloid outlet.

Wonder if this was the surprise Christmas present Rory Mac promised his girlfriend when Caroline Wozniacki crashed his Dubai press conference looking for hints about what to expect from Santa this year?
