Are Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki engaged?

Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

It appears that the goofy t-shirts Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki exchanged under the mistletoe may not have been the only Christmas gifts for sports’ power couple. The tennis-playing half of Wozzilroy sparked serious speculation that golf’s No. 1 and the formerly top-ranked hard court star were engaged when she showed up in Australia on Thursday sporting a ring on her left hand.

Wozniacki, with her guy pal in tow, landed in Brisbane in preparation for the Brisbane International and Australian Open tennis tourneys next month. Since the two travel in tandem whenever possible, it was the sparkling diamond on Wozniacki’s left ring finger that stirred rumors that have been fomenting for some time that the duo had made it official over the holiday, according to several reports.

In what appeared to be a Twitter gag with Sascha Bajin, Serena Williams’ hitting partner, Wozniacki last month denied that her honey had proposed. But the question she popped -- about what Santa might bring her -- during a McIlroy press conference in Dubai did nothing to curtail the talk.

Wozniacki chatted with reporters at the airport, though not about her relationship with McIlroy, while the Courier-Mail noted that an “agitated” McIlroy ducked all queries. The 10th-ranked player on the women’s circuit later took to the Queensland Tennis Centre court for a practice session wearing rings on both hands but without what the publication termed an “enormous blue sapphire with diamond band ring” she had displayed earlier.

For the record, Danish women traditionally wear wedding rings on their right hands. And with Wozniacki’s propensity for pranks, the whole thing could be a practical joke -- for now.
