Accenture Match Play 2012: Scores And Recap For Wednesday

The first round of the 2012 Accenture Match Play tournament is known for producing plenty of upsets and curious results. Wednesday’s results were no different.

Top seed and defending champion Luke Donald lost 5&4 to late-entry Ernie Els in the opening round. After getting into the tournament via Phil Mickelson’s decision to skip, all Els did was out-play the No. 1 player in the world.

Three-time winner Tiger Woods scraped by one up against Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. One down after 14, Woods birdied the 15th and then took the lead at the par-3 16th, never looking back.

Masters champion Charl Schwartzel cruised past American Gary Woodland 4&2 and Bae Sang-moon upset Britain’s Ian Poulter, the 2010 champion, 4&3.

World No. 3 Lee Westwood defeated Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts 3&1 and fourth-ranked German Martin Kaymer advanced with a 4&2 win over Australian Greg Chalmers. South Korean Yang Yong-eun beat Britain’s Graeme McDowell 2&1 while Dustin Johnson got past Jim Furyk after 20 holes.
