Waste Management Phoenix Open 2012: Rickie Fowler And Phil Mickelson Try To Chase Down Spencer Levin

The third round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open is underway, and it’s “go green” day at TPC Scottsdale. Fans and players were encouraged to wear green as a show of support for the environmental initiatives the title sponsor promotes. All of Saturday’s early morning tee times will need to go low, as they look to make up ground on second round run-away leader Spencer Levin. The California native had a breakout year in 2011 and carried a 6-shot lead over Harrison Frazier into the weekend as he looks for his first PGA Tour victory. He will need to fall apart over the weekend and come back to the field, or someone will have to duplicate his 63 to make this interesting on Sunday.

Rickie Fowler is another young dynamic star looking for his first tour win. He’s trying to make a charge at Levin, and was two under through the first four holes. But Fowler went bogey-bogey at five and six to fall back to even. He’s still 10 shots back so he will have to set a blistering pace over the final two-thirds of his round to get into contention on Sunday.

Fowler played alongside local favorite Phil Mickelson in the tournament’s power group for the first two rounds. Mickelson won this event 15 years ago, but has failed to win in front of the friendly Arizona State crowd since. He’s two under through his first five holes, and eight shots back of Levin. Americans Martin Flores and John Rollins are five under on their front nine and the only other mid-morning players making a run at Levin’s number.
