Masters Leaderboard: Lee Westwood Leads Tournament, International Bloc Entering Second Round

Lee Westwood tops the 2012 The Masters leaderboard entering the second round at Augusta National on Friday. But the Brit is not the only international name near the top of the leaderboard, just one of many; he may have to fend off an international bloc to earn a signature PGA Tour triumph.

More Masters: Tiger Woods Battles Swing In First Round

Westwood sits at 5-under after a Thursday 67. He is followed by 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Sweden’s Peter Hanson, both at 4-under, and a trio of non-American players at 3-under (Paul Lawrie, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Francesco Molinari) is joined by a trio of players representing the Stars and Stripes, Ben Crane, Jason Dufner, and Bubba Watson.

For Westwood, being in contention at a major is nothing new: he has top-three finishes at all four of golf’s major championships. But Westwood has never won a major, and hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2010, when superb but largely non-winning play helped elevate him to the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. If Westwood can pull out a win at Augusta, his career resume — marked by scads of European Tour success and few breakthroughs on the other side of the pond — would finally have a unquestionable top line.
