Twitter Fave Gonzo Just Wants To Have Fun

Andres Gonzales is all about having fun. If his score at the Byron Nelson is any indication, he’s really enjoying himself this week.

If you don’t recognize Andres Gonzales from his awesome Fu Manchu and long, flowing tresses, just look for the golfer at this week’s Byron Nelson Championship who’s having a blast on the course.

“If we’re not having fun,” Gonzales asked reporters after firing an opening-round 4-under 66 at this week’s PGA Tour event at TPC Four Seasons outside Dallas, “what’s the point in playing?”

Good question, Gonzo! But what about the money, one reporter persisted. For sure, a paycheck had to be one of the reasons to chase a little white ball around the fairways and greens of the Nationwide Tour, where you spend most of your time.

“Yeah, it is,” Gonzales, who attained a sponsor’s exemption into the Byron Nelson field thanks to a Twitter campaign by his more than 20,000 followers. “But if you play well and you’re having a good time, then money is just a bonus.”

Gonzales, who’s gained a measure of renown for his Twitter-tweaks of Tiger Woods, may end up having a bang-up birthday celebration (he turned 29 on May 16) as well as pocketing a few Benjamins. Unless things changed dramatically enough to move the projected cut line from 1-over -- and despite carding a 72 on Friday -- the 2006 UNLV-Las Vegas journalism grad will enter the weekend just four shots back of newly crowned Players champ Matt Kuchar and four others tied at the top at 6-under.

How much more fun can one golfer have?
