Phil Mickelson Withdraws From 2012 Memorial, Citing Mental Fatigue

Phil Mickelson’s 2012 Memorial Tournament is over after one round, as Lefty withdrew Thursday evening citing “mental fatigue.”

Mickelson shot a 7-over 79 in his first round, hitting four of 14 fairways and five of 18 greens in regulation in one of his worst rounds on Tour. Mickelson came in with a 42 on the back side, including a stretch where he played the final three holes at 4-over.

For being one of the biggest earners in sports, Mickelson typically plays more stops on the tour when compared to the rest of the top names in golf. He took last week off at Colonial, but had played three tournaments in a row this month prior to that. He was clearly not in form, so the withdrawal is not surprising, especially with Mickelson targeting the “white whale” of his career in two weeks at the U.S. Open.

You can find a full, live leaderboard here.
