AT&T National 2012: Tiger Woods One Back After Hot Third Round Start

As the weather in Bethesda, Md. has gotten hotter, so has the play of Tiger Woods. After shooting a +1 on Thursday when the mercury wasn’t hitting triple digits, Tiger fired a three-under round on Friday and, through seven holes on Saturday, he’s at -3 again after birdieing holes one, three and six.

Woods now finds himself just one stroke back of the AT&T National leaders Hunter Mahan and Brendan De Jonge, who each are sitting at six-under through five holes. Woods is in a four-way tie for third place with Jhonattan Vegas, Pat Perez, and Robert Garrigus. Woods holed a 45-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole yesterday, so it wouldn’t be unexpected for him to continue to drop his score as the round goes on. A strong ending on Saturday would be a good sign that he’s capable of bouncing back and winning tournaments after his epic U.S. Open collapse at Olympic.
