Matteson’s round consisted of seven birdies and two bogeys en route to his 65 while hitting 57 percent of his fairways and 67 percent of greens in regulation. Fellow golf enthusiasts will remember that Matteson was also an early leader at the John Deere Classic earlier in the month before faltering on the weekend.
Recently-crowned British Open champion Ernie Els will begin his round at 1:10 p.m. EDT and is paired with veterans Vijay Singh and Matt Kuchar.
