2012 RBC Canadian Open Leaderboard: Scott Piercy Fires 62, Leads After First Round

Scott Piercy’s an unlikely leader for any PGA Tour event. His 8-under 62 in the first round of the 2012 RBC Canadian Open has given him the lead heading into Friday, though.

Piercy made two eagles, five birdies and just one bogey on Thursday at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, setting a new course record and establishing a one-shot lead on Greg Owen. Piercy began both his front and back nines with three consecutive pars, then played the final six holes of each stretch in 4-under.

Piercy’s a bit of a late bloomer: After turning pro in 2001, he didn’t earn his PGA Tour card until 2009, and only has one win on tour, the 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open. But he’s got a number of top-20 finishes in 2012, and two top-fives, including a solo third place finish at the John Deere Classic just two weeks ago.
