Webb Simpson Loves Him Some Chick-fil-A

If Webb Simpson had not won the U.S. Open, chances are his recent tweets in support of Chick-fIl-A would have blasted into the Twitter-sphere and disappeared with little notice. But Webb did win the country’s national championship, and so, rightly or wrongly, his opinions about matters beyond the fairways and greens carry some weight.

Given Simpson’s description of himself on his @webbsimpson1 Twitter page as “*sinner* loved by a Savior,” it’s not surprising that he would jump into the fray on the side of the socially conservative president of the fast-food franchise, who said in June that support for equal marriage was “inviting God’s judgment on our nation.”

Simpson, one of many PGA Tour players who are unabashedly upfront about their faith, began his Tuesday night Twitter marathon by providing links to “great and amazingly true” articles that slammed critics of restaurant president Dan Cathy’s antediluvian views on gay rights. After receiving responses to his controversial tweets, Simpson claimed he had “nothing against anyone. No singling out any group or person. I jut love to discuss big issues with people and some people IMMEDIATELY get so mad before coming up with their thoughts on an issue. Is it wrong to like a well thought out opinion of some current event??

Simpson, who noted, “I love me some fast food,” praised the chicken eateries and their fare as well.

“Reasons for loving chickfila: They serve humbly They say “my pleasure” Food is great Polynesian is awesome Milkshakes are awesomest,” Simpson typed.

Wednesday, by the way, is “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” according to Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, and former governor of Arkansas, who has organized an eat-in in support of the chicken chain.

Gay rights advocates plan a “Kiss Mo Chiks” counter-demonstration on Friday, when they are urging backers to fill Chick-fil-A restaurants and kiss each other.

KFC, anyone?
