Rory McIlroy may be smacking tennis balls around the Yale Bowl, but Masters champ Bubba Watson was not about to let the winner of the recent PGA Championship one-up him in his prep work for The Barclays, which starts Thursday at Bethpage Black. To prove to the friends of the unidentified owner of the house he’s renting this week that he was, indeed, enjoying the gorgeous view from their lake-front deck, Watson decided on Monday to smash some golf balls off various household objects. First up was a pillow, from which Watson negotiated a fairway metal.
Bubba Watson Doesn’t Need No Stinkin’ Tees
“Bubba here,” Watson said after the hand-held camera panned from the impossibly blue water over to the Travis Mathew-clad golfer. “I’m not sure whose house this is, but, hopefully, they don’t mind me hitting off this cushion.”
Watson then moved indoors to hit a ball off a tight lie and over a four-foot deck railing from what appeared to be a deluxe Oriental rug in a family room.
“I just got it up and made it out of the house,” Watson told reporters on Tuesday about his decidedly different approach to preparing for this week’s FedEx Cup event.
Watson declined to i.d. the jokester who yelled, “You da man!” after he ripped one from the rug. And, despite hitting it fat off the pillow, neither the cushion nor the carpet appeared to be harmed in the making of Bubba’s video.
“I didn’t break anything,” Watson assured the media. “I’m all right at golf sometimes.”
