Fire In The Hole! Extreme Makeover For Massachusetts Golf Course

Harvard, Mass. -- You know how there are a couple of holes on almost any golf course you play that you would love to blow the hell up? Well, Fred Curtis, the new owner of Shaker Hills Country Club (formerly Shaker Hills Golf Club) in this rural suburb of Boston some 40 or so miles northwest of Boston, made a convulsive statement about his intentions to put a new imprint on the award-winning 21-year-old facility.

“That was one explosion out of five days of multiple explosions,” general manager Tim Valas told us Thursday about the earth-shattering changes afoot at a course seeking to reclaim its faded glory.

Curtis’ goal is to open the new version of the classic old course -- which Golf Digest rated several times in the 1990s among the country’s “best” and “top” public tracks -- by the end of September.
