Tiger Woods unaffected by wet conditions at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods has his choice of the best rain gear in the world but he’d rather get wet.

USA TODAY Sports

Tiger Woods is no wimp when it comes to playing golf in the rain.

Unlike many Farmers Insurance Open competitors, who took refuge under their caddies’ bumbershoots as showers fell across Torrey Pines later in the second round, Woods preferred to weather the elements unfettered by water-resistant equipment.

“No, I don’t like rain gear very much and I’d much rather play in sweaters, if I can,” Woods told reporters after he posted a 7-under 65 on Friday for an 11-under total and a two-shot lead over Billy Horschel. “Hey, you can only get wet once, right? Once you’re wet, you’re wet.”

Woods noted that the sogginess, which Golf Channel announcers obsessed about for much of the afternoon and forced Phil Mickelson to don two rain gloves, affected his play for only about two and a half holes. While it softened the greens and made them “pretty bumpy,” he said, the dampness did not warrant a wardrobe change.

So no Nike Storm-Fit attire for the swoosh-festooned Woods, who may have coined a new slogan for Rory McIlroy’s new sponsor.

When it comes to inclement weather, Woods advised, “Deal with it.”
