Tiger Woods has moved to 13-under at the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open, making the turn in 34 during his third round on Sunday morning. Woods started quickly, hitting two perfect approach shots on back-to-back holes to pick up birdies at No. 2 and No. 3. Those early moves set him up for a potentially huge lead at the turn, as he still had both par-5s ahead of him. I wrote yesterday that Tiger’s work on the par-5s pushed him into the lead at the midpoint, and it didn’t take long for him to take advantage of the first par-5 he encountered on Sunday.

Tiger will attempt to close out the final 27 holes at Torrey Pines to win in his debut event of the 2013 PGA Tour season.

During his career, Woods is 27-under at the sixth hole on the South Course. He has 12 eagles alone on that hole, and he found the green in two yet again on Sunday. But Tiger was on the lower level of the green, and needed to come up some 41 feet to the cup. He lagged one short of hole, and cleaned up his birdie putt to move back to 13-under. After a disappointing bogey on No. 5, getting the birdie at six was imperative in order to keep things rolling in the third round.
On the second par-5 of the front side, Woods had to settle for par as he could not get up and down for birdie on No. 9. But he’s still 10-under on the par-5s alone this week.
It looked like Woods might make his second bogey on the par-3 8th hole, but the short game, which carried him through the first round on Thursday, saved him yet again. Woods decided to pull 8-iron and take aim at the 177-yard hole, but he flew it over the green, missing deep and shortsiding himself in the rough with the pin tucked near the back edge. He avoided bogey, however, when he flopped a perfect wedge for a tap-in saved par.
It’s all working for Woods right now -- both off the tee and around the green. Given his comfort and knowledge of the course, it’s unlikely he yields the lead. Nick Watney, who played with Woods during the first two rounds, is making a charge. Other than Woods, Watney is the biggest star on the leaderboard and is currently two back at 11-under after he picked up four shots through his first 10 holes.
