Johnny Manziel tees it up with the Jonas Brothers

USA TODAY Sports

The first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Johnny Manziel has more than pigskin on his mind. In fact, everywhere you look, there’s Johnny Football -- helping David Letterman count down from 10, sitting knee-high to LeBron James at a Heat-Mavs game, and waiting for Santa by playing a quick 18 with the Jonas Brothers.

Last time we on the golf side of the house checked in with Manziel, he was hitting the links to celebrate his 20th birthday and warm up for the College Football Awards. Since then, he’s lifted his sport’s version of the Walker Cup, made the rounds on late-night talk TV, and played a round with a popular boy band. Guess we’ll see tonight if all that off-the-field carousing and on-course duffing has given Oklahoma new-found confidence when they take on Johnny and his Texas A&M crew in the Cotton Bowl.

As Inside College Football’s Stewart Mandel noted on SI.com recently, “Between the awards circuit and the pending departure of mentor Kliff Kingsbury, Johnny Manziel has experienced a lot of distractions since his Heisman Trophy run. And Oklahoma coordinator Mike Stoops will have some tricks in store for him come January. Don’t expect a Heisman flop, but don’t be surprised if four-year Sooners star Landry Jones (3,989 passing yards) has a bigger night.” (Mandel’s pick: OU 48 - A&M 42)

[In other football-related news, turns out that photo of a Tim Tebow manikin taking a seat in a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in New York was only part of the story. Darren Rovell revealed the other half of the photo, which included replicas of Giants players as well, with superstar Victor Cruz balancing the floor display by also relaxing on a bench. So, basically, nothing to see here. Apologies to the much-maligned QB15.]
