2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open: No clear winner in 16th-hole caddie race

Christian Petersen

You won’t see caddies, their golfers’ bags shouldered, towels and clubs flying, take off in all-out sprints at the Masters -- or any other PGA Tour event, for that matter. But that’s just what you do when you get to the rowdiest hole in golf, the par-3 16th at TPC Scottsdale, and you’re hauling the luggage in the opening round of the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

As Richard Lee’s looper learned, dropping the bag on the way to the putting surface will earn you a DQ.

“You gotta get to the green and then it counts,” according to the broadcaster making the call.

Extra credit (and perhaps, wheelchairs) for oldsters like me who remember Rick Dempsey, circa 1977, with the Baltimore Orioles (4:43 on the video), going into his famous head-first rain-delay slide.
