Northern Trust Open 2013 purse: John Merrick, Charlie Beljan big winners at Riviera

It was the first career win for John Merrick, who earned almost $1.2 million by winning his hometown event at Riviera.

John Merrick picked up his first PGA Tour career win on Sunday at Riviera, and it was also his first seven-figure payday. Merrick has certainly earned plenty of cash during a career with several top five finishes, but his win at the Northern Trust Open in his hometown of Los Angeles was by far the biggest check he’s collected to date.

Merrick needed two playoff holes to beat out Charlie Beljan, who was going for his second win in the past four months. Merrick, an LA native and UCLA alum, was tearful on the 18th green as he was being interviewed by David Feherty of CBS. It was a Sunday full of career highlights, capped by a nearly $1.2 million payout. Beljan’s playoff loss secured him a solo second finish, and more than 700k of the total $6.6 million purse.
