2013 Masters field: John Merrick joins list of 88 entrants at Augusta National

John Merrick, who’s finished in the top 10 at Augusta in the past, is the latest to add his name to the list of invitees at this year’s Masters.

With his win at Riviera on Sunday night, John Merrick added his name to the list of qualifiers for the 2013 Masters. Merrick becomes the 88th player to earn entry into the field at Augusta National, with only a few more qualifying chances remaining before April.

Merrick, a Los Angeles native, needed two playoff holes to edge out Charlie Beljan for the Northern Trust Open title on Sunday. Beljan, who won at Disney in the fall, would have also earned a berth into The Masters with a victory (the Fall Series win did qualify). While Merrick does not have a ton of experience at the majors, he has fared well in limited appearances. This will be his third time playing at The Masters, an event where he debuted with a T6 in 2009. He also has top 10 finishes at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.

With the 2013 edition less than two months away, there are only a few chances for players on the outside to gain entry. The remaining ways to play yourself into the field are a) winning one of the seven eligible tournaments left before this year’s Masters or b) moving into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings the week before The Masters. And there’s always the longshot c) getting a special invite from the membership.
