The first round of the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play is nearly in the books, and there were plenty of upsets on Thursday. In addition to the top two players in the world, several high seeds and international stars were knocked out in the opening round.
WGC-Accenture Match Play 2013 results: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy two of several high seeds upset in 1st round
In addition to Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, several big names were sent packing in the first round on Thursday.

No. 2 seeds Lee Westwood and Adam Scoot both went out before Woods and McIlroy. Westwood had an opportunity to close out Rafael Cabrera-Bello on the 18th hole, but a bogey pushed things to extra holes and set up the upset. Scott dropped his match to Tim Clark, who’s been in form through the first two months of the season while Scott has played sparingly. Despite the same seeding, that’s not as big an upset as Westwood blowing his lead on the back nine.
The two other No. 1 seeds, Luke Donald and Louis Oosthuizen, were also pushed late into the day in their opening rounds but they held on at the end to avoid the upsets that struck Woods and McIlroy. Donald is a past winner and typically an ace in match play, and he cooly drained a moderate-length putt on the 18th hole to clinch a win over Marcel Siem. Oosthuizen will be one of the top picks to win at Augusta in April, and he closed out Richie Ramsay on 17th green.
Keegan Bradley and Dustin Johnson were a couple of the other big names who were upset later in the day at Dove Mountain. There are two more matches still out on the course: Rickie Fowler is 1 down to Carl Pettersson on the 18th hole, while Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano is all square with Francesco Molinari through 15 holes. After the snowstorms of Wednesday pushed everything back a day, the PGA Tour will play the full round-of-32 on Friday and then double up on both days this weekend.
