Michael Jordan buys lakefront McMansion on North Carolina golf course

Andy Lyons

Michael Jordan loves his golf, so it’s hardly a surprise that the six-time NBA world champion appears to be amassing a collection of de luxe homes within chip shots -- or smack dab in the middle -- of some prime golf course real estate.

A year after putting the finishing touches on a 28,000-square-foot mansion at Jack Nicklaus’ Bear’s Club in the new links capital of the world, Jupiter, Fla., Jordan has purchased a cozy cottage near Charlotte, N.C., for a cool $2.8 mil. Now, all His Airness need do is roll his six-foot, six-inch frame out of bed, slip into his cargo shorts, and amble to the first tee, since his new digs are on the seventh hole of the Rees Jones-designed Peninsula Golf Club in Cornelius.

Jordan owns the Charlotte Bobcats, so it makes sense that he would want to maintain a loft close to his team. A Tar Heel since he was a toddler, Jordan reportedly already owned a swanky condo downtown. The penthouse, however, does not provide the “stunning panoramic [Lake Norman] views from almost every room,” that his new 12,300-plus square footage affords him, according to the Associated Press.

With the cream of the PGA Tour crop settling into Tiger Woods’ Jupiter neighborhood, Jordan put his Chicago chateau on the market. While bedding down in a bungalow for those Bobcat home games must be convenient, no doubt Woods’ favorite Ryder Cup assistant captain will spend much of his spare time playing $50,000 Nassaus with the former No. 1.
