Sergio Garcia climbs a tree, withdraws from 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational

Sergio Garcia leaves Bay Hill early; tree adventure to blame?

David Cannon

Sergio Garcia took an unusual detour on the par-4 10th hole on Sunday at Bay Hill when he shimmied up a tree to hit his second shot, which was lodged in the crook of said tall bush.

Not long after taking a back-handed whack at the ball, jumping down from his perch, and carding a double-bogey for his troubles, Garcia withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. PGA Tour officials did not immediately provide a reason for his early retirement, but at least Garcia’s in the running for “Shot of the Day” with his trick shot.

Of course, Matt Every will likely claim the prize for shot of the week, after holing this eagle shot from the water on the par-4 third:

Every’s shot overshadowed the beauty Nicholas Thompson made on Saturday on the par-3 17th:

Garcia, by the way, also carded a quadruple-bogey 9 on the sixth hole on Sunday and was 5-over for the week when he withdrew after 12 holes.
