Puerto Rico Open 2013 scores: Patrick Cantlay, Luke Guthrie in the red after 1st round

Andres Romero and Cameron Percy hold a 1-shot lead at 7-under after the first round of the 2013 Puerto Rico Open. While the biggest golf stars from across the globe light up Doral to the north in Miami, there were plenty of up-and-comers posting low rounds at another Trump property.

Romero and Percy, however, are two well-traveled pros with plenty of starts under their belts. Romero has one career PGA Tour win, and has gone on several hot streaks during different stretches of his career. He carded seven birdies and an eagle during his opening round 65, while Percy finished with nine birdies and two bogeys to match.

Much like Doral, the Trump International course was vulnerable on Thursday and a majority of the field is in red numbers, including veterans David Duval and John Daly. Both shot opening round 70s to start the week at T42. You never know what to expect anymore from both players, but it’s a solid start and puts them in position to make the weekend.

Joining Daly and Duval at 2-under are two of the younger stars in the golf world, Luke Guthrie and Patrick Cantlay. Guthrie is fresh of his impressive showing at the Honda and has been steady throughout the first two months of the season. Both he and Cantlay will likely earn PGA Tour victories in the near future, and this week provides an excellent opportunity with most of the world’s best playing at the WGC event. As we saw on Thursday, rounds in the mid-60s are available and both can make dramatic charges up the leaderboard on Friday.
