Phil Mickelson teaches any “idiot” how to hit a golf ball from the cart path

Warren Little

Phil Mickelson can do things with a golf club of which mere mortals can only dream. Like his 47-yard recovery shot from the cart path on the par-4 17th hole during Thursday’s first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship that landed his golf ball nine feet from the pin and set up a routine birdie.

Hey, they don’t call him Phil the Thrill for nothing. Here’s how it all went down: Mickelson blasted his tee shot far into foul territory down the right-field line, it found the warning track and just took off, finally coming to a halt on the cart path some 450 yards out. On a 419-yard hole.

Completely undaunted, and to the surprise of no one who’s ever enjoyed watching Mickelson’s wizardry around the greens, he took aim with his wedge and proceeded to hit a clunky but effective wedge shot to the green.

If you thought that was cool, listen to the big southpaw telling his adoring minions how they, too, can pull off such an improbable feat. (Our favorite parts -- when he plays producer with “Tommy” in the booth and states flatly that “you’d have to be an idiot to open the club face.”)

Phil, by the way, fired a 5-under 67 and was set to start Friday’s second round one shot back of a bunch of 18-hole leaders, including Tiger Woods.
