Tiger Woods out but Rory McIlroy will play at Quail Hollow

Tiger Woods will adhere to his traditional post-Masters schedule and skip this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, but Rory McIlroy will join a slew of heavy hitters at Quail Hollow tuning up for the upcoming Players Championship.

A calendar change for 2013 moved the Wells Fargo to two weeks after the Masters and Woods tends to take a hiatus after Augusta, though recent results indicate that Tiger may not miss the Charlotte, N.C., stop all that much. He won there in 2007 but missed the cut in 2010 and 2012 and was out with injuries in the intervening year.

The event may not miss Woods either, with a field that includes the world No. 2, who won the tourney in 2010 and lost in a playoff to eventual winner Rickie Fowler and D.A. Points in 2012. McIlroy, who recently posted an inspirational message on his Twitter feed, has been out and about in Monaco, among other glam spots, with girlfriend Carolyn Wozniacki since finishing T25 at the Masters.

McIlroy will have competition for the title, with 10 of the world’s top 25 among the 156 players who’ll start on Thursday. Fowler will be among them, looking to repeat and notch his second PGA Tour win. So will Phil Mickelson, who’s searching for consistency after winning in Phoenix and tying for third in match play but closing at T54 in Augusta, and 2012 Masters champ Bubba Watson, who’s coming off a T15 at last week’s Zurich Classic.
