Bubba Watson tweets support for Chris Broussard’s views on Jason Collins

Bubba Watson generally gets a pass for proselytizing about his religion (“Christian. Husband. Daddy. Pro Golfer,” reads his Twitter description). But when the popular 2012 Masters champ praises a fellow Christian for his homophobic statements about co-religionist Jason Collins, that goes too far for some of us.

Watson tweeted his support for hateful comments from Chris Broussard, who remarked on ESPN’s Outside the Lines on Monday after NBA player Jason Collins came out that homosexuality was “a sin” and a “rebellion against God.” The endorsement of such drivel from a guy who wears purple and swings a hot pink driver was more than disappointing, if not at all shocking.

ESPN apologized on Tuesday for Broussard’s comments and the neanderthal himself issued one of those “please don’t fire me for being an intolerant buffoon” faux mea culpas on his Twitter page. Watson’s ill-considered tweet was hardly the first time the four-time PGA Tour winner has shared his faith with his more than 900,000 followers, and he and Broussard were far from the only members of the sports community who were not supportive of Collins’ courageous statement.

But playing the faith-based card did not sit well with at least one observer, Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder, who stated simply, “I’m a Christian. I stand with Jason Collins.”

Given the emotional impact Collins’ SI article and the reactions to it have had on many who believe in equality for all and those who don’t, we’ll let Yoder’s eloquent words speak for themselves and hope that Watson, Broussard, and others may read and consider them.
