Martin Laird wins the 2013 Valero Texas Open

Martin Laird torched the TPC San Antonio on Sunday, shooting a nine-under 63 to claim the Valero Texas Open.

Martin Laird captured the 2013 Valero Texas Open thanks to a scintillating final round that propelled him from seventh place all the way to the top of the tournament. Laird fired a nine-under 63 to get to 14-under for the tournament, two shots better than second place Rory McIlroy.

Laird started his day with a par at number one, but followed it up with back-to-back birdies and he was off. By the turn, he was five-under for the round and he finished off his day in style with three straight birdies to take a commanding lead that nobody would come close to.

The TPC San Antonio had proved tough all week, with few players mustering better than two or three under each day, but it did ease up on Sunday. McIlroy shot a six-under 66 to finish second and Peter Hanson also shot a 66, while Jimmy Walker managed a 67, but nobody was even in the vicinity of Laird’s 63.

Laird was simply sensational, shooting far and away the best round of the day, and of the tournament, to earn his third career PGA Tour win.
