Valero Texas Open 2013 results: Martin Laird shoots final round 63 to win

Martin Laird took the Valero Texas Open by storm on Sunday, shooting a nine-under 63 to jump from seventh to first and win the tournament at 14-under. It is Laird’s third career PGA Tour win.

Laird followed up a par on the first hole with consecutive birdies and could not be stopped after that. He attacked the TPC San Antonio, bombing drives and sticking shots by the pin all round. He was five-under for the day at the turn and finished his round with three straight birdies, which would prove to be the winning margin.

Rory McIlroy finished 12-under for the tournament after shooting a six-under 66 on Sunday to come in two shots back of Laird. Billy Horschel, who led the tournament heading into Sunday, shot a one-under 71 to drop back into a three-way tie with Jim Furyk and Charley Hoffman for third place at 11-under for the weekend.

Sunday proved to be the lowest-scoring day of the tournament at the TPC San Antonio. After three days of four-under 68’s leading the way with the occasional 67, everyone went low on Sunday. In addition to Laird’s 63 and McIlroy’s 66, Peter Hanson also shot a 66, while Jimmy Walker shot a 67 and everyone except for Horschel in the top 14 shot at least two-under.

But it was Laird’s 63 that stole the show. He was sensational and in one day went from challenger to runaway winner of the Valero Texas Open.
