Stuart Appleby and Mike Weir are two of several golfers playing Quail Hollow who are vying for the remaining tee time at next week’s Players Championship. A win at Quail Hollow punches the ticket for that fortunate golfer.

The Zurich Classic, which ended Sunday, represented the last chance for players to get into the top 50 of the world golf rankings and earn positions at TPC Sawgrass that way. New Orleans winner Billy Horschel won his spot in the so-called “fifth major” by capturing his first PGA Tour victory.

Among players in this week’s field, Vijay Singh will make his first appearance since the tour cleared him of using performance-enhancing drugs. The 50-year-old three-time major champion escaped punishment after the World Anti-Doping Agency informed tour officials that the deer antler spray Singh admitted to ingesting was no longer an illegal substance.

Singh last won at the 2008 Deutsche Bank Championship. The former world No. 1 has also plummeted out of the top 100, entering the week in the 117th place.

Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter won’t be playing this week. Both golfers pulled out Tuesday, with DJ citing a wrist injury as his reason for withdrawing.
