Players Championship leaderboard 2013: Ben Crane charging in final round

Ben Crane wants to be mentioned amongst the best at The Players Championship, with four birdies in his first five holes in the final round placing him amongst the leaders.

USA TODAY Sports

Most of the top of the leaderboard at The Players Championship hasn’t yet teed off, but Ben Crane’s strong early play is pushing him into the pack.

Crane started the day at 4-under, seven strokes off the lead shared by Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, and David Lingmerth. But he birdied four of his first five holes on the day, and currently sits at 8-under, tied for eighth. The fourth most notable member of Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, and Hunter Mahan’s novelty boy band, Crane is a long shot to win his first tournament since 2011, but if he keeps pushing, he could be amongst the leaders. The 37-year-old who missed the cut at last year’s Players Championship is currently the only golfer amongst the top 10 to start play on Sunday.

Others streaking on the final day of play at TPC-Sawgrass include Jimmy Walker, who is 6-under through 14 holes, and Zach Johnson, who has four birdies through nine holes. They both sit at 7-under, tied for 11th.
