Tiger Woods never took a ball drop from “the gents’”

Tiger Woods has had his share of dubious ball drops this season, but we believe we’re safe in saying that, while the world No. 1 has taken relief from many a water hazard, he’s never had to measure two club lengths from a water closet.

That’s exactly what happened to Nicolas Colsaerts, when, during Saturday’s quarterfinals of the World Match Championship, he lost his tee shot on the par-4 10th hole into a hazard behind a little boys’ room.

Sounding a bit harsher even than Johnny Miller criticizing Woods for taking a favorable drop during the recent Players Championship, a European Tour announcer suggested that Colsaerts hit the ball from the first point of relief.

“I think you should put him in the loo, open the window, and make him play outta there,” announced the broadcaster, who, unlike Miller, was jesting.

Colsaerts disagreed.

“I ain’t hitting it out of the loo,” joked the golfer, who went on to par the hole.

Another telecaster did his best Miller impersonation and questioned the spot officials awarded Colsaerts relief, which started in the rest room, proceeded to the adjoining cart path, and eventually ended on a slope of well-traveled sod.

“I’m not sure if this is the nearest point, to be honest with you,” opined the commentator. “He could have dropped...a bit more behind him. I have to question the referee here....There’s actually a closer position with relief away from the cart path. I don’t think they’ve noticed that.”

Others in the booth enjoyed the ludicrous moment for what it was.

“This is an absolute first on the European Tour, taking a drop in the gents’,” laughed one.

“I think Nicolas is looking a bit flushed about this, to be honest,” deadpanned another. “So whatever’s convenient.”

Colsaerts had a tee-hee there on the 10th, but ended up on the short end of a 2-and-1 loss to eventual tourney winner Graeme McDowell.
