After a flurry of early birdies, the scoring has slowed in the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open. Charl Schwartzel remains atop the leaderboard and he’s been joined by Tim Clark at 2-under.
U.S. Open leaderboard: Charl Schwartzel, Tim Clark lead
The early groups have made the turn at Merion and Charl Schwartzel is still atop the leaderboard.


Nine players are currently under par as the early groups have begun to make the turn in their first round. After three early birdies, Schwartzel bogeyed No. 18 to drop a stroke. Tim Clark birdied two of his first three holes and managed to play through the difficult stretch of holes on the back nine without dropping a shot. Cheng-Tsung Pan, an amateur who plays for the University of Washington, is also tied for the lead with two birdies on his first four holes.
After beginning his round with a bogey, Phil Mickelson moved to 1-under after a birdie at No. 1. Mickelson is one of six players one stroke off the lead at 1-under. While Mickelson has been steady, Bubba Watson has been up-and-down. Watson is 1-over through 11 holes with six pars, two birdies and three bogeys already on his card.
