British Open 2013 leaderboard: Phil Mickelson adds early birdie, Sergio finishes 3-under in 3rd round

Muirfield is firming up as the sun continues to bake the Scottish coast, but Sergio Garcia has demonstrated that there are birdie opportunities out there.

The leaders are still finishing up on the range at the British Open, but Phil Mickelson, who started the day four shots back, picked up a shot early. Mickelson rolled in a birdie putt on the second hole to get back to even-par for the Open Championship, attempting to make a charge up the board on the front nine.

Mickelson has now played the second hole birdie-double bogey-birdie through the first three rounds. That’s the most Figjam of sequences on a relatively unremarkable hole. Of course, Phil quickly gave that shot back, making a mess of the easier par-5 fifth hole. Mickelson sent his drive off the fairway and into the heather, forcing a layup short. He completely misjudged his third shot, however, sending it way over the putting surface where he could not get up-and-down for par. He’s back where he started at 1-over.

Phil’s playing partner, Justin Leonard, and Hunter Mahan are both under par early in their round, settling at 1-over and five shots back.

Keeping with the trend of the past two days, Muirfield is playing a little easier in the morning but the afternoon sun will dry out the course and make things more challenging for the leaders. Sergio Garcia had the fortune of getting out early and completing a 3-under round of 68, sinking a lengthy birdie putt on the 18th to finish at 3-over.

Garcia had six birdies in his round, demonstrating that despite the conditions, there are red number opportunities out there. Here’s the top of the leaderboard, as well as some notables who are out on the course:
