Bernhard Langer, Mark Wiebe finish 2013 Senior British Open in the darkness at Royal Birkdale

At 9:43 p.m. local time in Southport, England, play at the 2013 British Senior Open was finally called for the day with Bernhard Langer and Mark Wiebe still engaged in a sudden death playoff. Sunday’s final round featured two weather delays and a double bogey by Langer on the 18th that pushed things to extra holes.

Both Wiebe and Langer agreed to start the playoff in the gloaming, which led to almost ridiculous conditions by the time the players reached the second playoff hole. The cart headlights were on, and all the clubhouse lights illuminated the backdrop of the 18th green. Here’s a video of Wiebe firing his approach shot into No. 18 in the darkness, and the veteran promptly exclaimed “Never saw it!” as soon as the ball left his club:

Wiebe and Langer still could not settle it on that second playoff hole, so things will resume Monday morning at 8 a.m. local time in England. Langer is a multiple major winner on both the PGA and Champions Tours, while Wiebe has never been in this good a position to win a major championship.
