The Barclays scores 2013: Kevin Chappell surges into contention

Matt Kuchar is still at the top of the leaderboard after three rounds at The Barclays, but he has company after Gary Woodland managed to earn a share of the lead and Kevin Chappell climbed to one stroke off the tournament lead with an impressive round on Saturday.

Chappell, 27, finished at a course-record 9-under in the third round, sinking nine birdies total, including six on his final nine holes of the day. After entering the third round in 43rd place in nine strikes back, Chappell is now only one stroke off the lead and all alone in third place behind the pair of leaders. He bested the prior course record, 8-under, set Friday by Keegan Bradley.

Kuchar, the leader after two rounds, shot 1-under on Saturday, though it could have been worse. He had two bogeys in his first seven holes, but three birdies on the back nine earned him a share of the lead heading into Sunday. Woodland, who fired a 68 to catch Kuchar at the top at 12-under, had four birdies on the front nine followed by three bogeys and two birdies on a volatile back nine.

One spot behind Chappell sits Tiger Woods, who finished 2-under on Saturday, to climb four spots closer to the tournament lead. Woods, who has never won at The Barclays, will have to make up four strokes on the leaders on Sunday if he hopes to earn a tournament victory and will have to avoid the rough start to his round that he had on Saturday.

The final round of competition is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. ET with coverage on Golf Channel beginning at 12 p.m. Coverage will switch to CBS at 2 p.m.
