The Barclays 2013 payout: Winning share is $1.44 million of $8M purse

The PGA Tour has put millions on the line for their postseason FedExCup, and the first big check will be cashed Sunday in New Jersey.

The purses for the four FedExCup Playoffs events are once again $8 million per tournament, and the first winner’s check of $1.44 million will be handed out on Sunday evening at Liberty National. The $8 million purses are some of the largest all season, matching the totals at the four majors. Only The Players and WGC events have more money on the line than the PGA Tour’s playoff push in the final month of the season.

The Tour and commissioner Tim Finchem needed to put significant cash behind the FedExCup in order to make it work and lure the top players in the world to these events after the majors were over. Now in its seventh year, the Playoffs continue to attract the top names and what was initially panned as a contrivance, is now a nice competitive end to the year.

All four winner’s checks over the next month will be for $1.44 million, with the overall FedExCup winner taking home that grand prize of $10 million. The irony, of course, is that the overall winner doesn’t necessarily have to win one of the four events in order to take home the most cash from the postseason stretch.

Adam Scott and Justin Rose are currently tied for first at the opening playoffs event. Those two players have already cashed more important checks earlier this season, but another million-plus payday would be a good start to the playoffs. The second-place finisher will receive $864,000 -- still nice for a week of work.
