The BMW Championship, nee Western Open, features one of the smallest fields all PGA Tour season. But the Tour still opts to send the 70-man field off two tees in groups of three, condensing tee times into a two-hour window that results in the entire field actually being out on the course at one time, if only for a short window. The smaller field also allows the PGA Tour to push start times back a bit, holding the first groups until late morning local time in Chicago, and 11:20 a.m. ET.
2013 BMW Championship: Tee times and pairings for Friday’s second round
The PGA Tour will condense the smaller 70-man field into two hours of tee times on Friday, holding players until the late morning and early afternoon at Conway Farms.

Tiger Woods was out in the first wave on Thursday, so he and his featured threesome will be out later in the second round on Friday. Woods is once again out with Henrik Stenson and Adam Scott, the Tour putting the top three players in the FedExCup standings together. Both Woods and Scott are on the first page of the leaderboard and inside the top 10. Their marquee group will go out at 12:59 p.m. ET, so at least the back nine of their round should fall in the 3 to 6 p.m. TV coverage window on Golf Channel.
Tiger played well on Thursday, finishing with a 5-under round of 66 but the No. 1 player in the world still walked away frustrated and disappointed. That’s because Woods missed multiple putts inside five feet, near-gimmes that he just blasted by on the left side of the hole to leave several shots out on the course. He also played the par-5s, which are definite birdie holes, in even-par. Woods said after the round that he was not pleased with how things went, but if he keeps that form on Friday, and not the shaky stuff we saw in Boston, he’ll be right at the top of the leaderboard as the tournament moves to the weekend.
There is almost no chance of rain in the forecast on Friday so the Tour should encounter no issues maneuvering the 24 groups through Conway Farms on schedule. With such a small field, there is no cut so everyone will play 72 holes this week unless they withdraw. But getting through the final FedExCup cutdown and making it into the field of 30 at the TOUR Championship serves as a de facto cut, even if it comes after four rounds in Chicago.
