The third leg of the four-tournament FedExCup resumes on Saturday at Conway Farms for the third round of the BMW Championship. With just 70 players still in the PGA Tour’s postseason field, there was no cut so those players who are struggling, such as Rory McIlroy, have to stick around a few more days and play out the string.
BMW Championship 2013: Tee times and pairings for Saturday’s third round
Friday afternoon’s finish at Conway Farms featured just the sixth round of 59 in Tour history, and some more rules drama for Tiger Woods. Now, the No.1 player in the world has to turn around to more drama and play with old friend Sergio Garcia on Saturday.

While there is no cut this week and all 70 players go the full 72 holes, the entire tournament serves as a de facto cut for the playoffs because less than half will be moving on to Atlanta for the TOUR Championship. It’s the biggest chop of the entire playoffs, so these final weekend 36 will be tense as so many players try to elbow their way in to safety and a shot at the overall $10 million grand prize at East Lake.
Tiger Woods, who started the week at No. 2 in the FedExCup standings, will go out at 12:50 p.m. ET alongside old friend Sergio Garcia. After an opening round 66 paced him to a tie for third, Woods scuffled into the clubhouse on Friday with a disappointing 1-over 72 and some more late rules drama. It’s been an incredibly wild year for Woods, and Friday’s late two-stroke penalty was just the latest chapter. Tiger was assessed the penalty when video showed that his ball moved while he adjusted loose impediments on the first hole. PGA Tour rules officials notified him of the issue before he signed his card more than four hours later, and after some back-and-forth, Tiger took the two-stroke penalty that bumped his score on that opening hole to a quadruple bogey 8.
Thanks to Jim Furyk’s record round of 59, Tiger is now outside the top 10 and seven shots off the pace set by Furyk and Brandt Snedeker. To make matters worse, his every shot, movement, and flinch will be on camera Saturday due to the draw of his playing partner. This will be the first time Tiger and Sergio play together since the outbreak of trash talk at The Players in May, and likely the first extended time the two have had together since the Spaniard took it to a bad place with his “fried chicken” remarks. These two may not be the leaders or the one who made history on Friday, but their pairing will be the marquee group and focus of the afternoon coverage on Golf Channel and NBC.
