The PGA Tour makes a short trip across Southern California this week for the second stop of the annual West Coast swing. The Farmers Insurance Open is the fourth event of the calendar year on the PGA Tour, but for most, it’s the de facto start to the season. That’s because Tiger Woods, the vessel for most fans consumption of the Tour, begins the new year at Torrey Pines, a stop he has dominated on an almost annual basis.

Tee Sheet: Thursday's opening round at Torrey Pines
Tiger will be going for his ninth career Tour victory at Torrey Pines, seven of which have come at this event with an additional U.S. Open victory, his last major championship, on the South Course in 2008. Woods rolled to a Monday finish win there last year, the first of five and the start of a pre-Masters stretch that rocketed him back to No. 1 in the world. Tiger is, of course, expected to win again on a course he’s owned, and that would pull him just two victories back of Sam Snead’s 82 total PGA Tour wins.
Nothing left to prove
The 2014 golf season begins at 1:40 p.m. ET on Thursday. That's when Tiger Woods arrives at the tee at Torrey Pines. It's a tournament he owns, but from which he gains little at this point in his decorated career. Woods tees off at 1:40 p.m. ET on the South Course, the more difficult and renowned layout at the public Torrey Pines. Phil Mickelson, the local favorite, will be out just over an hour earlier on the North Course. Mickelson is coming off an impressive weekend in Abu Dhabi, where he made a huge charge up the leaderboard to finish second in his 2014 debut. He’s not fond of the redesigned South Course, but the North should provide an opportunity for Phil to post a low number to start the week.
This is the first event of the year for CBS, but they will not pick up coverage until the weekend. Golf Channel will continue its 2014 coverage on Thursday with a broadcast from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET. So most of Tiger’s first 2014 round should be carried by Golf Channel. He’ll be six to eight holes into his round when the event starts to air, but it’s likely they show highlights of his ongoing round during their pre game show.
