Tiger Woods playing at Torrey Pines usually makes his group a must watch. That was the case on Friday, but it had nothing to do with Woods. Instead, 20-year-old Justin Spieth stole the show, carding a 9-under 63, the best round of the day. Spieth is now 10-under for the tournament and will head into the weekend with a one-stroke lead.
2014 Farmers Insurance Open: Jordan Spieth vaults into the lead, Tiger Woods fades
Tiger Woods has gone low plenty of times at Torrey Pines, but on Friday it was his playing partner playing his way into the lead.

Although he shot just a 1-under 71 on Thursday, Spieth didn’t necessarily play poorly. He just failed to capitalize on his birdie opportunities. He didn’t have that same issue on Friday. Spieth hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation and capitalized on more than half, making nine birdies. According to PGATour.com, six of his nine birdie putts were inside of four feet. Woods was one of many who came away impressed.
“The kid’s got talent,” Woods said, via PGATour.com. “He hits it a long way, phenomenal putter. He made a boat load of putts today from the 10- to 20-foot range, and on poa greens, that’s not easy to do. He was pouring them in there. He had speed to them, too. That’s what you have to do to putt on poa.”
If Woods is going win for a ninth time at Torrey Pines, he’s going to need a round similar to Spieth’s. Woods shot a 1-under 71 in the second round and is nine strokes off the lead and in a tie for 50th place at 1-under. He made just two birdies on Friday and finished the round with a bogey. He isn’t the only notable name well down the leaderboard. Phil Mickelson shot a 73 in the second round and is 2-under overall. He is battling some back issues and said withdrawing is still a possibility, depending on how his back feels on Saturday.
Spieth holds a one-stroke lead over Stewart Cink. Cink followed a 64 on Thursday with a 1-under 71 on Friday. Nicolas Colsaerts at 8-under, Billy Horschel at 7-under and Marc Leishman at 7-under round out the top five. A few notable names won’t be around for the weekend. Rickie Fowler and Brandt Snedeker were among the players who finished on the wrong side of the cut line.
